Spotlight 5 5 2012

Berean, there are five words I pray God never says to me: “. . . Behold, I am against thee. . . ” Ezekiel 21:3. Yet He said these words to His people Israel. God had warned them that, “And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken to me; I . . . will scatter you among the heathen.” Leviticus 26:21, 33. Jeremiah had warned the people that because of their sins, they would go into Babylonian captivity. But the false prophets encouraged the people to believe in lies. They even began to feel a sense of security when the Chaldeans, who had been besieging Jerusalem, retreated. But Jeremiah warned: “. . . Deceive not yourselves, . . . the Chaldeans . . . shall not depart.” Jeremiah 37:9. Divine judgment was about to fall upon the impenitent nation. Yet Jeremiah pleaded with the people to submit to the decree of God and go willingly into captivity, but they refused to humble their proud hearts. The lessons of obedience they did not learn in favorable circumstances, they would be forced to learn in bondage.

It was because of Israelʼs continued disobedience that God allowed them to be subjugated by the Chaldeans. God’s people, “. . . walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.” Jeremiah 7:24. Because of their unwillingness to change their evil ways, many died a needless death, and the Chaldeans destroyed their beloved Jerusalem and its magnificent temple. Godʼs Word warns us today that these things were written for our admonition and learning. This same God, who punished iniquity then, is pleading with us today to, “. . . Amend your ways and your doings, . . . that it may be well unto you.” Verses 3, 23. Amen!

Berean, if we want to ensure that our children do not hear from God those fearful words, “I am against you,” we must help them receive the kind of education that will teach them to obey God—for their good. We can do this by supporting Christian education. Letʼs place our love gifts in the baskets that are brought to us by the children at Offering time or in a tithe envelope (indicate amount on the Education/Scholarship line). Thank you so much, and God bless you!
