Did you know that before the Israelites entered the Promised Land God gave them specific instructions regarding the education of their children? "Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart... you shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates." Deuteronomy 11:19-20. Their instruction in righteousness was to be continuous...in all their thoughts and everywhere they looked! Love and devotion to God permeated every aspect of the Israelite's life. But children imitate what they see, not always what they hear, which is why God's words must first find lodgment in the hearts of the adults that they must look to for examples.

If we, as a church family, desire to see our youth love and reverence God, we must talk of His goodness, His love, His majesty; we must reflect His character in all that we do and say; we must set the example; we must teach the youth that God sets before us, "A blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord .... A curse, if you will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God." Deuteronomy 11:27-28. God's impassioned plea is, "Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all my commandments." Why Lord? "That it might be well with them and with their children forever!" Deuteronomy 5:29. God wants us and our children to be blessed! But that blessing is contingent only upon obedience to His commandments.
Berean, I know it's our ardent desire that God will bless our youth, and that they will come to know Him as their personal Savior. We can participate in their spiritual growth and maturity by supporting Christian education. Our generous love gifts may be placed in the baskets that are brought to us by the children at Offering time or in a tithe envelope (indicate the amount on the Education line). May the God of heaven richly bless you for your love, kindness and generosity.

Yours in Christ,
Toni Osborne
